Suspended Urologist under investigation

Local events are being held in the Solihull area to update ex-patients of consultant urologist, Arackal Narayan Manu Nair, following his suspension in April 2014.  Known as Mr Manu Nair, the surgeon was suspended when colleagues grew concerned at some of his surgical practices.  At the time he was working at Solihull Hospital, Heartlands Hospital and Spire Parkway and doubts were raised surrounding his treatment of men suffering from prostate cancer.  The events, which are being run by Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, are being held between the 21-30 March in St Paul’s Centre, the Renewal Christian Centre in Solihull and the Lea Marsden Hotel.  The events will inform ex-patients about the results of investigations being carried out by the Royal College of Surgeons and the Heart of England Trust.

“33 sessions of radiotherapy to counter his mistake”

Mr Nair, who has appeared on Embarrassing Bodies, is being investigated following carrying out radical prostatectomies on 170 patients.  The consultant, who was also a clinical director at Heartland’s hospital, has since resigned from the Trust.

One of his ex-patients has described how he had two operations carried out by the surgeon, who informed him that there was a very low risk of complication following the procedure.  The first of the two operations was a prostatectomy that took place in January 2011.  The patient, who wished to remain unnamed, said: “I can’t believe that over five years later I’ve had to have 33 sessions of radiotherapy to counter his mistake”.
